Brain Tumors
Brain tumors come in many forms. Whether the tumor is cancerous or not, it does not minimize the impact of having a foreign growth in the brain. Over time, pressure caused by the tumor may impact cognitive and physical functioning. Therefore, treatment of a brain tumor comes with risks and impacts.
Having a neuropsychologist as a member of the treatment team is critical. Once a brain tumor is diagnosed, the patient should be referred for a neuropsychological evaluation before treatment starts if it is medically possible. This assessment will help the treatment team understand if the tumor impacts brain function while comparing baseline data after treatment.
Based on the proper treatment for the patient, follow-up visits may be recommended. For example, effective treatments like radiation may eliminate a tumor by attacking at a cellular level; however, healthy brain cells are also affected. Follow-up visits allow tracking of any negative impacts, including reduced cognitive functioning, caused by treatments.
Some individuals may also need varying levels of rehabilitation to help restore or improve cognitive or motor function. The goal is to ensure everything possible is done to improve the patient’s immediate and future quality of life.
Cancer and “Chemo” Brain
Chemo brain is a common term used to describe thinking and memory problems during and after cancer treatment. Chemo brain is also called chemo fog, cancer-related cognitive impairment, or cognitive dysfunction.
Although chemo brain is widely recognized as a side effect of cancer treatments, there is still not much research or knowledge about what causes the condition. It is, however, incredibly frustrating for an individual who is already experiencing high levels of stress while undergoing cancer treatment.
Because neuropsychologists specialize in cognitive functioning, they can help create a plan to improve this frustrating side effect. A variety of treatments may help an individual cope and adapt to chemo brain, including cognitive exercises, tracking and evaluating triggers of memory loss, and general stress management tactics to cope with the condition.
Prematurity & Birth Complications
Premature birth and other complications during delivery may cause a host of cognitive and developmental issues in newborn children. These issues are caused by a wide variety of possible problems, such as lack of oxygen to the brain and other congenital disabilities.
Any child between the ages of 6 months and 18 who demonstrates difficulties with learning, development, or cognitive functioning (e.g., attention) could benefit from a neuropsychology evaluation.
Early intervention is key to helping a child live the best quality of life possible.

Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is fluid buildup in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain.
A range of brain function problems and damage to brain tissue may occur due to the high pressure caused by the excess cerebrospinal fluid. Hydrocephalus may happen at any age, but it is much more common in infants and adults over 60.
Surgical treatment for hydrocephalus can restore and maintain normal cerebrospinal fluid levels in the brain. However, different therapies are often required to manage symptoms or problems resulting from hydrocephalus which include a wide variety of physical and cognitive functioning based on the individual’s age and severity of the condition.
A neuropsychologist helps individuals cope with and restore cognitive functioning impacted by hydrocephalus.
